Urban underground utility pipelines are like deeply buried blood vessels, ensuring the stable operation of municipal and industrial systems. Inside the confined, dimly lit pipe corridors, challenging conditions such as condensation, sludge buildup, and persistent vibrations have long posed significant obstacles to pipeline inspection. Conventional inspection methods struggle to detect even minor damage to pipe walls. As a core piece of equipment for trenchless inspection, the visual system of pipeline crawling robots—its imaging, control, and data transmission capabilities—directly determines the effectiveness of inspections. The Kaimorui CM8230 zoom lens module, paired with the CM2001SH encoder control board, delivers a vision solution specially tuned for underground environments, enabling hidden pipeline defects to be clearly identified.

1.Low-light HD capture——CM8230, a zoom lens mechanism designed for low-light conditions inside pipes.
The interior of pipelines suffers from poor lighting, and moisture can easily cause images to appear washed out and introduce a sharp increase in noise, placing extremely high demands on imaging hardware. The CM8230 is equipped with a 1/1.9-inch SONY CMOS sensor, delivering 2.3-megapixel output at full 1080p HD resolution, with a minimum illumination as low as 0.01 lux. Leveraging digital slow shutter technology, it continues to produce clean, crisp images even in dimly lit conditions—deep within pipelines where light is nearly absent. With 30× optical zoom combined with 12× digital zoom, the system achieves up to 360× total magnification: in wide angle mode, it quickly captures the entire pipe wall; in telephoto mode, it precisely locks onto minute details. Subtle defects such as wall cracks, rust spots, misaligned joints, and liner delamination are all clearly discernible. The lens offers a focal length range of 6.0–180 mm, enabling flexible field of view switching, while supporting an ultra wide operating temperature range of –30°C to 70°C, ensuring reliable performance in challenging environments like underground temperature fluctuations and condensation prone, humid conditions. This capability underpins long duration, uninterrupted inspection missions by crawling robots.
2.Anti-disturbance stable control transmission——CM2001SH, the reliable signal hub for inspection robots
During pipeline traversal, uphill climbing, and turning, the pipeline crawling robot experiences continuous jolting and vibration, which can easily lead to signal interruptions and parameter loss. The CM2001SH features a four-layer military-grade PCB control board with gold-plated traces, delivering exceptional resistance to vibration and electromagnetic interference, making it well-suited for demanding underground operating conditions. The board interfaces with a high-definition camera via LVDS, enabling simultaneous output of SDI and HDMI video streams, so the ground-based control terminal can receive real-time footage in sync, meeting the needs of multi channel display and recording. Equipped with dual RS485, RS232-TTL, IO interfaces, and local buttons, its multiple control channels support both long-distance communication over extended cables and on-site debugging. It also incorporates power loss memory and command passthrough functions: even if an unexpected power outage occurs during inspection, the system automatically restores previous parameter settings upon restart, eliminating the need for repeated adjustments. Compatible with VISCA and PELCO protocols-D. PELCO-P, a mainstream protocol, is compatible with Sony FCB and CM series cameras as well as numerous domestically produced VISCA based camera modules, effectively reducing the integration and secondary development costs of pipeline inspection robot systems.

3.Integration of data acquisition and control to establish an integrated intelligent inspection workflow.
High definition imaging and stable control are both indispensable; only when combined can they unlock the full potential of pipeline inspection crawlers. The CM8230 handles front end image acquisition, leveraging high magnification zoom to enable a tiered inspection mode that combines wide area scanning with detailed magnification. Meanwhile, the CM2001SH manages command forwarding and video transmission, ensuring smooth video streams and reliable packet delivery even under the robot’s continuous vibration. Together, this complete visual link system closes the loop from on site imaging to signal transmission and remote operation. All inspection footage can be stored, replayed, and archived, allowing operations and maintenance personnel to remotely assess defects and classify risks without entering the wellbore—thus moving away from the previous coarse grained inspection approach based on empirical estimates and proactively preventing safety incidents caused by pipeline leaks or damage.
4.Flexible customization expands the boundaries—Kaimorui empowers the upgrade of pipeline inspection equipment.
The application scope of this integrated solution is not limited to municipal drainage networks; it is equally well suited for inspection robots used in water supply, gas, oi transport pipelines, and industrial process lines. The CM8230’s wide temperature operating range accommodates the complex environmental conditions found across diverse regions and media. Meanwhile, the CM2001SH boasts exceptional protocol compatibility, enabling equipment manufacturers to flexibly configure their systems and swiftly complete prototype testing and large scale deployment. Kaimorui offers OEM and ODM customization services, tailoring solutions to the structural dimensions and communication protocols of pipeline inspection crawlers to deliver mature, reliable vision hardware platforms. By leveraging cutting edge vision technology, we empower trenchless inspection, making underground pipeline monitoring more precise, safer, and more efficient, and continuously driving the digital and intelligent transformation of pipeline operations and maintenance.
