Troubleshooting Flickering Issues of Infrared Cameras

Source:Shenzhen Kai Mo Rui Electronic Technology Co. LTD2026-10-23

Conventional infrared cameras nowadays generally adopt photosensitive components to detect ambient illumination intensity. Based on the threshold values defined in design parameters, control signals are generated to turn on infrared lamps. When using infrared cameras, you may encounter flickering in camera images. How should such flickering problems be resolved? Below, editors from Kaimorui will share relevant solutions with you.

Solutions to Flickering in Infrared Cameras

  1. Adjust the threshold value. Threshold values vary among units of the same‑model product due to discrete differences. Replacing the camera unit may resolve the issue.
  2. Improper circuit design. Manufacturing infrared cameras is not a simple matter of fitting infrared lamps into camera housings. Prior to installation, camera circuits must be redesigned and subjected to aging treatment.
  3. Captured particulate matter. In dusty outdoor or field environments, the infrared lamps of the camera may capture fine particles invisible to the naked eye. This phenomenon is hardly noticeable to human eyes and the camera in daytime when infrared lamps remain off, and it is caused by environmental conditions.
  4. Poor workmanship. Manual assembly may result in unfocused and scattered infrared lamp light. Dispersed light produces overall illumination yet yields a washed‑out, hazy image. Inadequate light‑blocking cotton in front of infrared lamps can also scatter infrared light and lead to such milky, indistinct visuals.

The primary cause of flickering in infrared cameras is as follows: the photosensitive component detects illumination slightly below the threshold and triggers the infrared lamp to turn on. Once the infrared lamp lights up, reflected infrared light raises the detected illuminance above the threshold, which in turn switches the infrared lamp off. This lowers the detected illuminance again and re‑activates the infrared lamp. The cycle repeats continuously and gives rise to image flickering. The above‑mentioned solutions have been introduced for your reference.
