Does the Lens of an Infrared Thermal Imager Require Regular Cleaning?

Source:Shenzhen Kai Mo Rui Electronic Technology Co. LTD2026-10-30

The purpose of cleaning the lens of an infrared thermal imager is to remove dust and oil stains so as to prevent interference with measurement or image accuracy. Normally, clean the thermal imager lens only when absolutely necessary. There is no need to clean it regularly or before every use. Carry out cleaning only when visible dust or fingerprints appear on the lens. Today, let’s talk about how to clean the lens of an infrared thermal imager.

Lens Cleaning Methods

  1. To clean the lens, use a soft cotton cloth dabbed with a small amount of non‑corrosive solution or mild diluted soapy water to wipe the lens gently. Do not fully submerge the cotton cloth in liquid.
  2. Wipe from the centre of the lens outwards toward its edge using a rolling motion; ensure only clean cloth comes into contact with the lens during cleaning.
  3. Use lens cleaner containing 96% isopropanol, or general‑purpose lens cleaner with at least 30% isopropanol content.
  4. Moisten cotton balls or lens cleaning paper with the cleaning fluid. Discard used cotton balls or lens cleaning paper; do not reuse them.

From the information above, we can see that regular cleaning is not required for infrared thermal imagers. Cleaning should be performed only when dust or oil contamination is present. When cleaning the lens, select an appropriate method according to actual conditions. Wipe gently using soft, clean cloth until the lens surface colour is clearly visible, then allow it to air‑dry. Do not wipe the lens surface dry, as this may cause scratches.
